Being a genre birthed in Chicago you wouldn't usually expect to hear footwork/juke music being made 13,000 km away from the windy city. However that's exactly what's being done through Auckland producer Surly. His latest release Turpentine marks his arrival and addition to Los Angeles collective Juke Bounce Werk . The frenetic jazzy chops sound like a concoction of Kamasi Washington, Ahmad Jamal and DJ Rashad frantically thrown together. Don't be fooled though, the result is something marvellous, and is certainly enough to keep us plugged in to future releases from Surly.
