It's been two & a half plus years since Third3ye released their excellent debut album On3ness. The wait since then has felt like an eternity. Still, they've managed to get their follow up record (in this case an EP) out before Frank Ocean has so it can't be all that bad. During that time MeloDownz & Angelo King have both toyed with their own solo projects and collaborations. Here they have teamed up with old friends along with new acquaintances to present perhaps their most ambitious effort yet.
Following an intro spoken fully in Te Reo, MeloDownz switches between softly sung vocals and double-time rap flows over lush instrumentation provided by former (unofficial) group member Ben Jamin'. Angelo similarly spits some ferociously delivered earth raps to conclude the song. Tracks like the funk laced Feet 5 help shine a light on other rising talent in the NZ scene (Bailey Wiley); while touching on topical social issues such as police brutality and violence.
I ain't got no bad bone in my body
Police pointing guns at everybody
All this bloody murder
Please don't look no further
What happened to the love in everybody?
Standout track Space Gospel brings heavy low-end that'll have sub-woofers rattling your windows (literally). The group then shift the mood on the closing song Yew Want where they fuse reggaeton riddims with 16-bit chiptones. Stay on the liightsiide and open your Third3ye.
