ZEN MANTRA: Zen Mantra

ZEN MANTRA: Zen Mantra

Also a member of Yumi Zouma, Sam Perry brings some of that dreamy sound to his solo-project Zen Mantra. The self-titled album (released under the legendary Flying Nun Records) is an adventurous trip through psychedelic pop. In amongst the reverberated guitar tones and melodies, and echoed vocals you'll notice the well-written nature of the lyrics and hooks. Throughout the album Sam handles and presents themes like escapism, falling in love, and the passing of his father with such honesty and elegance. Speaking to The Wireless in their Verse Chorus Verse series he touched on the song Maybe I'll See You In My Dreams:

There's lines like “I wish I could sleep through my life / cus’ maybe I’ll see you in my dreams” and the coda is, “You’re coming home from work / You’re walking through the front door / You’re calling out my name from the bottom of the stairs again”.
I wrote the basis of this song a few years ago, but it took until last year to really capture the sentiment. I needed distance from my emotions to properly articulate them.
